A neo-Nazi gang had taken advantage of Paul's campus free speech policy to try to recruit new members. Paul was stabbed to death by one of them in retaliation for having the temerity to hand out pamphlets opposing the Nazi group - because apparently in the eyes of the Nazis, 'free speech' only applies when it's speech THEY support.
