Deana and her husband, Serafin Lorenzo, were murdered in a robbery by a pair of neo-Nazis. The Nazis had hatched a plan to rob the Lorenzos and use the proceeds to fund a trip to South America to attack Venezuela.
The Nazis had a history of wandering around the world looking for trouble, including going AWOL from the US Army, enlisting in a Right Sector unit in Ukraine, getting turned down for an enlistment in the French Foreign Legion, and getting arrested in Kenya trying to sneak into South Sudan (ostensibly to fight against al-Shabaab). The first US charges against them stemmed, not from the murders, but from the fact that one of them allegedly returned to the US with child sexual abuse pics on his phone.
