According to the defense, Heather's sorry excuse for a boyfriend shot her by accident - he was just trying to scare her after beating her up. According to the defense, she was willing to let him have sex with her even though she had a bullet in her chest.
The defense wasn't very convincing, though to be fair the amount of evidence against the Nazi who murdered her was enough that they didn't really have much to work with.
Heather lived for two days after the shooting, gradually getting weaker and weaker. Her killer finally allowed her to be taken to the hospital on the 19th.
