Leonard was a botany lecturer on a solo camping trip through the wilderness of British Columbia.
He was murdered by a pair of teenagers who had set off on a baffling and ultimately pointless crime spree - they apparently intended to go hide in the wilds, but at some point changed their mind and killed themselves.
